Creating large, precise hexagons from natural marble is a technically demanding process requiring advanced machinery.

Block Selection & Cutting: A large, high-quality block of "Burgundy Red" marble is selected for its color and vein consistency. It is sliced into slabs of the required thickness (e.g., 2cm or 3cm) using a industrial gang saw or diamond wire saw.

Reinforcement (Optional but Likely): For large-format tiles destined for a high-traffic lobby, the slabs are often reinforced on the back. A layer of fiberglass or epoxy mesh is applied to prevent cracking and add structural stability. This is a critical step for delicate stone like marble in large formats.

CNC Cutting: This is the most critical step. A CNC (Computer Numerical Control) Waterjet is the essential machine. Its extreme precision allows it to cut the complex hexagonal shape from the large slab without shocking or chipping the brittle stone. A CNC router with a diamond blade could also be used but may require more finishing.

Honing/Polishing: The cut tiles are sent through an automatic linear polishing line. The machine uses a series of rotating heads with progressively finer diamond abrasive pads to achieve the specified smooth, uniform finish across the entire large surface of each tile.

Calibration: The tiles are passed through a calibrating machine to ensure every single hexagon has an exact, uniform thickness. This is non-negotiable for a seamless installation.

Quality Control & Sealing: Each tile is meticulously inspected for defects. It is then sealed with a penetrating sealer to protect it from staining during installation and use.

Keys to Achieving Good Quality

 

Absolute Dimensional Accuracy: Every single hexagon must be perfectly identical in size and angle. Even a 1mm error will cause the intricate pattern to misalign across a large lobby wall, making installation impossible and creating a visibly flawed result. The CNC waterjet's precision is paramount.

Uniformity of Color and Veining: This is a major challenge. All tiles for the project must be cut from slabs originating from the same quarry block and batch. The factory must "book-match" the slabs or carefully layout the cuts to ensure the veining flows harmoniously across the entire wall installation. Mixing batches will create a patchy, unacceptable appearance.

Perfect Calibration: All tiles must have identical thickness. Variation will cause lippage (uneven edges between tiles), creating a tripping hazard, catching light poorly, and resulting in an unprofessional finish.

Structural Integrity: The marble must be free of hidden fissures. The potential reinforcement on the back is crucial to prevent tiles from cracking under their own weight or due to vibrations in the building.

Consistent Finish: The honed or polished finish must be perfectly even across the surface of every tile, with no visible scratches, "halos," or uneven spots from the polishing heads.
