Quartzite Stones

Quartzite is a naturally occurring, metamorphic rock formed from Sandstone. When Sandstone comes into contact with magma buried deep within the earth’s surface, quartzite forms from natural quartz grain. Quartzite can be of exceptional strength, density, and hardness. Quartzite is highly sought after for kitchen countertop applications due to its similar veining and color palate to Marble, but with much higher resistance to everyday chemicals. Although all quartzites are not 100% non-porous, the abrasion resistance and weathering durability of quartzite allow for its use in almost any application. Quartzites with a honed finish require proper sealing.

Advantages of Quartzite Stones

Durability

Quartzite rock is extremely durable and resistant to wear, making it ideal for high-traffic surfaces. This durability is due to its hardness and strength, which protect it from abrasion and erosion.

01

Stain Resistance

When sealed properly, quartzite is resistant to stains, making it a popular choice for kitchens and bathrooms. This resistance is due to its porosity, which can be reduced with proper sealing.

02

Ease of Cleaning

Quartzite slabs are easy to clean and maintain, requiring only regular wiping with a damp cloth and mild detergent. This ease of cleaning makes quartzite ideal for kitchen and bathroom surfaces.

03

Wide Range of Colors

This stone is available in a wide variety of quartzite colors and patterns, offering numerous aesthetic options. This variety makes it a versatile material for furniture and construction.

04

Versatility

Due to its strength and beauty, quartzite can be used in a wide range of applications, both indoors and outdoors. This versatility makes it a material of choice for many types of projects.

Properties of Quartzite Stones

Durability

Quartzite is extremely resistant to abrasion and erosion, making it ideal for surfaces subject to wear. This strength is due to its dense crystalline structure and chemical composition.

Hardness

With a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale, quartzite is harder than most other natural stones. This hardness is due to the presence of quartz, one of the hardest minerals on Earth.

Transparency

Although quartzite is generally opaque, some varieties derived from its parent rock can be slightly translucent. This translucency can give quartzite a unique and attractive appearance.

Color

Quartzite can vary in color from white to gray, pink, green, and blue, depending on the minerals present. This variety of colors makes quartzite a versatile material for furniture and construction.

Luster

Quartzite, a metamorphic rock, has a glassy luster, which can range from dull to submetallic. This luster can give quartzite slabs a polished, refined appearance.

Porosity

Quartzite is a porous rock, which means it can absorb liquids if it is not properly sealed. However, proper sealing can prevent liquid absorption and protect quartzite slabs from staining.

The Most Common Finishes Include

Polished

Shiny surface with a smooth touch. It enhances the stone’s natural colors and veining.

Honed

Smooth finish without shine, creating a matte effect.

Antiqued/Leather

Slightly rough, three-dimensional texture that gives the stone a distinctive character.

Coloration

Usually a snowy white color, natural quartzite is generally white or gray with hints of brown and black. If the rock from which the natural quartzite was cut has some impurities, naturally colored quartzite will occur. For instance, iron oxide creates pink or red hues. Other minerals can add blue, yellow, or green accents.

Natural quartz can appear in a variety of colors. These include violet, rose, yellow, smoky yellow, brown and opaque.

Quartzite is a natural stone
It’s a naturally occurring metamorphic rock that starts out as sandstone. Over time and under intense heat and pressure, it is turned into ultra-strong quartzite. It’s quarried and cut into slabs just like marble and granite. Quartzite is a great material for countertops, flooring, wall coverings, vanity tops, and stair steps.

Quartzite is NOT the same as Quartz
Quartz is a natural material put together by man, is a manmade, engineered surface. Quartzite is natural stone. Because the names sound similar, the two are often confused. But they are not the same and do not feature the same properties.

Quartzite is extremely hard
Quartzite is a strong and durable stone that’s also resistant to many chemicals, extreme temperatures, and scratching. When it’s formed, the empty spaces between sandstone are filled with quartz—the hardest known mineral. Once it’s fused together over time with heat and pressure, the resulting stone will stand up to whatever the kitchen, bath, and rest of the home can dish out. There is a wide range of performance quartzite so be sure to ask a professional for help.

It’s strong, but quartzite is not bulletproof
Quartzite isn’t indestructible. It will need to be sealed once a year to help protect the surface from staining. In fact, a good sealer will help to enhance the rich flecks and veins of color. And as with all natural stone surfaces, spills should be wiped up as soon as possible and it’s always best to use a trivet for hot pots and pans.

Quartzite is commonly found in neutral shades
Natural, earth tones are the most common colors for quartzite. Slabs typically trend toward lighter colors like white, grey, and beige. However, it can be found in various other color options such as blue, green, pink, and even red. The color variation depends on several factors such as the amount of iron oxide present, the specific region the stone comes from, and its age.

It’s popular with designers.
Quartzite offers a sophisticated look with crystalline sparkle, and durability. It comes in earth-toned shades, which is trending in interior design right now. In fact, quartzite often has a very similar look to marble, but with less maintenance.
