1. Buying: Key Checks to Avoid Regret
Tile Quality & Authenticity: First, confirm it's genuine Brazilian Black Gold Quartzite (not dyed/imitation). Check for natural veining (imitation has repetitive patterns) and uniform 4x4 sizing-measure a few tiles; inconsistencies over 1mm cause installation gaps. Inspect flutes (grooves): they should be evenly deep (3–5mm ideal for shower traction) and smooth (no rough edges that catch dirt). Avoid tiles with cracks, chips, or color splotches.
Slip Resistance: For shower floors, fluted design boosts traction, but ask the supplier for a slip-resistance rating (R10+ is safe for wet areas). Test a sample: wet it and step on it-if it feels slippery, avoid it (shallow/flattened flutes offer less grip).
Supplier & Quote Clarity: Choose suppliers with experience in shower-specific natural stone tiles. Ask for a detailed quote covering tile cost, any custom fluting tweaks, and shipping (if buying from afar). Confirm lead times (fluted tiles may take longer to process) and return policies for defective pieces.
2. Installation: Critical Prep & Expertise
Subfloor Readiness: The shower subfloor must be level, dry, and sturdy (quartzite is heavy). Ensure it's waterproofed (use a shower membrane like Schluter Kerdi) before tiling-moisture under tiles causes mold or subfloor rot.
Grout & Spacing: Use sanded, mold-resistant grout (match grout color to tile veins for a cohesive look). Leave 1/8–1/4 inch gaps between tiles-fluted surfaces need enough grout to lock tiles in, but too much gap traps water. Hire installers experienced with fluted natural stone: they'll align flutes uniformly (vertical/horizontal per your design) and avoid uneven laying.
Slope for Drainage: Shower floors require a 1/4 inch per foot slope toward the drain. Confirm the installer calculates this-fluted tiles can hide poor slope, leading to standing water (a mold risk).
3. Maintenance: Keep Tiles Clean & Durable
Sealing: After installation, seal tiles and grout with a quartzite-specific, penetrating sealer (avoid topical sealers that peel). Re-seal every 12–18 months (test with water-if it soaks in, re-seal) to block moisture and stains from shampoo, soap, or hair dye.
Daily/Deep Cleaning: Wipe tiles with mild soap + warm water after use (avoid abrasive sponges that scratch flutes). Monthly, use a non-acidic stone cleaner to remove grime from flute grooves-don't use vinegar, bleach, or tile cleaners with ammonia (they etch quartzite and break down sealer).
Prevent Damage: Avoid dropping heavy objects (e.g., shampoo bottles) on tiles-flutes can chip. Don't use sharp tools (e.g., razor blades) to scrape off soap scum; use a soft-bristle brush instead.
