Essential Handling & Installation Guide

Before You Begin: Package Movement

  • Clear the Path: Ensure a flat, unobstructed route to the installation site before moving boxes.
  • Lift Correctly: Always lift boxes from the bottom. Never use plastic straps or top flaps, as this can tear packaging and damage tiles.
  • Use Proper Equipment: Transport boxes with a sturdy hand truck or dolly. Do not drag or slide them.
  • Inspect & Pace: Verify boxes are sealed properly. Move one box at a time for better control and safety.

Pre-Installation Preparation

Acclimation & Subfloor Readiness

Acclimate Tiles:
Store unopened tile boxes in the installation room for at least 48 hours prior. This allows the stone to adjust to the room's temperature and humidity, preventing future issues.

Prepare the Subfloor:
The substrate must be:

  • Clean, Dry, and Structurally Sound.
  • Perfectly Level: Variations must not exceed 1/8 inch over a 10-foot span.
  • Tested for Moisture: For concrete subfloors, conduct a calcium chloride moisture test.

A suitable underlayment is essential for long-term stability.

Layout & Tile Preparation

Dry Layout Planning

This critical step should not be skipped.

  1. Lay out tiles from multiple boxes without adhesive.
  2. Assess and embrace the natural color variation by mixing tiles from different cartons for a harmonious blend.
  3. Plan your pattern to minimize cuts around walls and fixtures.

Safe Handling & Cutting

  • Handle with Care: Hold tiles by their edges to avoid transferring oils from your hands to the surface.
  • Cutting Procedure: Use a wet saw equipped with a diamond blade rated for natural stone. Always wear safety goggles, gloves, and a dust mask. Practice on spare pieces first if available.

Installation Process

Applying Mortar & Setting Tiles

  1. Use Recommended Materials: Apply a high-quality, flexible thin-set mortar specified for natural stone over your subfloor type (concrete or wood).
  2. Ensure Full Coverage: Use the correct notched trowel (per mortar specifications) to apply mortar evenly to both the subfloor and the back of each tile.
  3. Set Tiles Firmly: Press each tile into place with a slight twisting motion to achieve complete adhesion.
  4. Maintain Joints: Use plastic spacers to ensure consistent grout lines; a minimum of 1/8 inch is recommended for marble installations.
  5. Work in manageable sections within the mortar's working time.

Grouting & Sealing

Post-Setup Curing & Application

Grouting:

  • Allow the thin-set mortar to cure fully (typically 24-48 hours).
  • Use only unsanded grout or epoxy grout formulated for marble-sanded grout can scratch delicate surfaces.

Sealing (Critical Step):
After grout has fully cured:

  1. Apply an impregnating sealer designed specifically for light-colored marble.
  2. Follow manufacturer instructions precisely, covering all tile surfaces and grout lines evenly.
  3. Proper sealing is essential for stain protection in high-traffic areas.

Long-Term Maintenance & Care

Initial Curing Period

Avoid placing furniture or heavy traffic on the floor until both mortar and grout have cured completely according to product guidelines (often several days).

Ongoing Cleaning & Protection

  • Use only pH-neutral cleaners made for natural stone.
  • Wipe up spills immediately, especially acidic liquids like wine, coffee, or citrus juice.
  • Use protective felt pads under furniture legs
