Description
Athens Portoro Marble staircase skirts design:
1) Processing and Machine
Manufacturing Process: From Slab to Skirting
The production of marble skirting involves specialized cutting and shaping to create a distinct profile.
1. Block Selection & Slabbing: The process begins with selecting a high-quality Portoro block with good color and vein consistency. The block is cut into slabs of a thickness slightly greater than the skirting's height using a large gang saw or wire saw.
2. Cutting to Rough Strips: The slabs are moved to a bridge cutter (a multi-blade cutting machine). Here, they are cut into long, narrow strips. The width of these strips matches the desired height of the finished skirting (e.g., 100mm, 150mm).
3. Profiling (The Key Step): The rough strips are then fed into a CNC stone router or a manual profiling machine. This is the most critical machine for skirting production. A diamond-tipped cutting tool, shaped to the exact reverse of the desired profile (e.g., ogee, bullnose, cove), follows a programmed path or a physical template. It grinds and cuts the strip to create the intricate decorative front face.
4. Cutting to Length: Once profiled, the long continuous strip of skirting is cut to standard manageable lengths (e.g., 900mm, 1200mm) using a manual cut-off saw or a bridge cutter.
5. Applying the "Rough" Finish: For a rough, non-polished finish like a split-face, bush-hammered, or sandblasted texture, the skirting undergoes a specific texturing process.
• Bush-Hammering: A bush-hammering machine (pneumatic or mechanical) with a head containing multiple tungsten carbide points is pounded onto the surface to create a uniformly pitted, gritty texture.
• Sandblasting: The skirting is placed in a cabinet where high-pressure air propels abrasive particles (like sand or grit) at the surface to etch it and create a rough, non-slip finish.
6. Quality Inspection and Sorting: Each piece is inspected for defects. Skirtings are sorted into bundles based on color and veining to ensure a consistent look when installed.
7. Packaging: The finished skirtings are carefully wrapped in protective foam or bubble wrap, with extra protection for the profiled edges, and packed into sturdy wooden crates for transport.
Keys to Achieving a Good Quality Product
1. Superior Raw Material: The foundation of quality is a first-grade Portoro slab with intense black color, bold golden veining, and minimal natural fissures or soft spots. Poor-quality stone will lead to breakage and an inconsistent appearance.
2. Precise Template and Tooling: The profile template for the CNC/router must be perfectly shaped and the diamond cutting tools must be sharp. Worn tools will cause chipping along the delicate profile edges and create a poor-quality shape definition.
3. Consistent Texture: For rough finishes, the texturing process (bush-hammering/sandblasting) must be applied with uniform pressure and coverage across all pieces. Inconsistent application results in a patchy and unprofessional look.
4. Dimensional Accuracy: All pieces must have identical cross-sectional profiles and precise 90-degree angles on the back. Any deviation will result in poor fitting, with visible gaps against the wall or floor.
5. Careful Handling and Packaging: Marble skirting, especially with a complex profile, is prone to chipping and breaking. Proper packaging is not an afterthought but a critical part of the manufacturing process to ensure products arrive in perfect condition.
