Bianco Statuario Marble slabs:
Machinery & Process: From Slab to Finished Tile
Slab Cutting (Block Cutter/Bridge Saw): Large marble blocks are first cut into slabs using a diamond wire saw or a gang saw. For tile production, these slabs are typically cut to a standardized thickness (e.g., 2cm or 3cm). Tile Profiling (Waterjet Cutter): This is the most critical machine. A CNC waterjet cutter uses a high-pressure stream of water mixed with abrasive garnet to precisely cut the intricate penny round (circle) shapes from the slab. This method prevents chipping and allows for tight nesting of shapes to minimize waste. Surface Finishing (Tumbling Line/Line Polisher): The cut penny rounds are loaded into a large, rotating tumbling machine or a specialized line polisher. They are tumbled with abrasive grits (like silicon carbide) and water. This process rounds off all the sharp edges, creates the uniform matte (honed) finish, and gives the tiles their characteristic tactile feel. Sorting and Netting: After drying, the tiles are meticulously sorted by color and shade to ensure consistency within each batch. They are then mounted onto flexible fiberglass mesh sheets, which hold the individual penny rounds together in a sheet for easier installation.
Keys to Achieving a Good Quality Product
Consistent Slab Selection: The entire batch must be made from slabs with similar background color and veining patterns. Mixing slabs from different lots will create a patchy, inconsistent final look on the wall. Precise Waterjet Cutting: The waterjet must be calibrated for a perfect, clean cut. Ragged or chipped edges on the individual circles will be visible after installation and look low-quality. Uniform Tumbling: The tumbling duration and abrasive grit must be consistent to ensure every tile has the same degree of edge rounding and matte finish. Under-tumbling leaves sharp edges; over-tumbling can make the tiles too small and thin. Proper Netting: The mesh must be strong, UV-stable, and correctly aligned. Poor netting leads to misaligned tiles, uneven gaps ("lippage"), and a difficult installation process. The pattern should be perfectly regular. Calibration: All finished tiles must be uniformly thick (calibrated) so the installation surface is even and flat. |
