1) Basic info

 

Palissandro Azzurro floor tiles are cut from small size blue Marble blocks, instead of from big size slabs – to save cost. People use 2cm (18mm) or say 3/4 inches thick slabs for living space, foyer or entryway feature wall, accent wall, and fireplace walling panels and hearth slabs. While 1cm or 3/8 inches and 12mm or 1/2 inches thin tiles for kitchen and bathroom backsplashes, shower walls and floors

Manufacturing Process & Machinery

The process for creating floor tiles focuses on precision, consistency, and achieving the desired surface finish.

Slab Selection and Block Cutting: Workers select Palissandro Azzurro slabs, prioritizing areas with desirable veining and minimal natural flaws. A Large Bridge Saw cuts the large slabs into manageable blocks.

Tile Calibration: The marble blocks are fed into a Calibrating Machine. This critical machine uses rotating diamond-tipped heads to grind the stone to a perfectly uniform thickness across the entire slab. This ensures every final tile will be identical in thickness.

Tile Cutting: The calibrated slab is moved to a Tile Cutting Machine, often a high-precision bridge saw or a gang saw with multiple blades. For hexagonal tiles, a specialized CNC Waterjet is essential. It uses a high-pressure stream of water and abrasive to cut the complex hexagonal shape with extreme accuracy and minimal material waste.

Edge Profiling (Optional): For a more refined look, the cut tiles may have their edges lightly beveled or profiled using a machine with diamond grinding wheels.

Surface Finishing:

For a Honed Finish: The tiles pass through an Automatic Polishing Line but are only processed through the initial grinding heads with coarse to medium-grade diamond abrasives (e.g., up to 400 grit). This creates a smooth, matte, non-reflective surface.

For a Polished Finish: The tiles continue on the polishing line through a full sequence of progressively finer diamond abrasives (up to 3000+ grit) and are finally buffed with a chemical polish to achieve a high-gloss, reflective mirror shine.

Quality Control, Sorting, and Packaging: Each tile is inspected. Tiles are sorted into boxes by shade and veining pattern to ensure visual consistency within a lot. They are then packaged securely in sturdy boxes with protective foam interlayers.

Keys to Achieving Good Quality

Calibration and Dimensional Accuracy: This is the most critical factor for installation. High-quality tiles must have a uniform thickness and precise, consistent dimensions (e.g., all sides of the hexagon must be equal). Poor calibration leads to lippage (uneven edges) and a difficult, poor-looking installation.

Grade and Consistency of Material: The factory must sort tiles into commercial grades. Ensure you are buying the highest grade ("First Grade" or "Premium"), which has minimal filling, patching, or natural flaws. The tiles within your shipment should be sorted for color and veining consistency.

Proper Filling and Resination: Natural marble often has small fissures. A quality factory will subject the tiles to a resin line. Here, a liquid resin is vacuum-forced into these micro-fissures and then cured. This strengthens the tile, prevents dirt ingress, and creates a more uniform surface for honing or polishing. The resin should be clear and color-matched.

Finish Integrity: The honed or polished finish must be even across the entire surface of every tile, with no visible scratches, hazy spots, or dull patches. The edges should be clean and crisp.

Packaging: Tiles must be packaged in rigid, reinforced boxes clearly marked with the grade, size, finish, and lot number to ensure all tiles in one installation come from the same production batch.
