1) Processing and Machine

 

Manufacturing Process & Machinery

 

Slab Selection: A "Burgundy Red" marble slab is chosen and inspected for major cracks or imperfections. It's moved with a bridge crane.

Block Cutting: The slab is cut into long, uniform strips using a large bridge saw with a diamond blade. The width of these strips determines the final size of the tile elements (e.g., 18x18mm for the basketweave pattern).

Strip Processing: The strips are fed through a multi-blade gang saw to slice them into many small, identical bars of marble. For a basketweave, these are typically small rectangles.

Honing: The marble bars are sent through an automatic linear polishing machine. To achieve the satin-smooth honed finish, the machine uses a sequence of abrasive diamond polishing heads, but stops before the final high-grit polishing stage that creates a gloss.

Basketweave Assembly: This is a manual or semi-automatic process. The honed marble bars are laid out by hand or with a jig into the basketweave pattern. They are then backed with a fiberglass mesh netting to hold the individual pieces together, forming the larger 18"x18" tile sheet.

Calibration & Trimming: The assembled tile sheet may be sent through a calibrating machine to ensure a perfectly uniform thickness across the entire surface. The edges are trimmed clean.

 

 

Keys to Achieving Good Quality

 

Raw Material Quality: The marble must be structurally sound. Slabs with latent fissures or soft veins will break during cutting and will not withstand foot traffic.

Precise Calibration: All the individual marble bars must be cut to exactly the same thickness. Any variation will result in an uneven tile surface, making installation difficult and creating a tripping hazard.

Consistent Honing: The honing process must be uniform across every single piece to ensure color and sheen consistency across the entire floor once installed.

Secure Mesh Backing: The fiberglass mesh must be strong and properly adhered. A weak mesh can lead to individual pieces becoming loose during transport or installation, ruining the pattern.

Packaging: Due to the mesh-backed design, these tiles cannot be stacked like standard tiles. They must be packed on edge (like books on a shelf) in the crate to prevent the weight from above cracking the pieces or dislodging them from the mesh.
