1) Processing and Machine

Manufacturing Process: From Slab to Finished Tile

The transformation of a Portoro slab into a finished floor tile involves a precise, multi-stage process.

1. Block Selection & Slabbing: Large blocks of Portoro marble are quarried and then cut into slabs using a gang saw or a wire saw. This is the first critical step, as the block must have good color and vein consistency.

2. Cross-Cutting & Tile Sizing: The slabs are moved to a bridge cutter. This machine uses diamond-tipped blades to cut the large slab into rough 12"x12" (or larger) squares. This step requires skill to avoid cutting through beautiful veins and to maximize yield.

3. Resin Application (Impregnation): Due to its natural fissures and porosity, the rough tiles often undergo resin treatment. A polyester or epoxy resin is applied to the surface. It seeps into any micro-cracks, fills holes, and dramatically strengthens the tile. This is crucial for durability and achieving a high-quality polish.

4. Aging & Curing: The resin must be left to fully harden and cure. This ensures it bonds completely with the stone.

5. Calibrating: The tiles are fed through a calibrating machine. This is a multi-head machine that grinds the tiles to a perfectly uniform thickness. Without this, tiles would be uneven, causing lippage and an unprofessional installation.

6. Surface Finishing:

 •  For Polished Finish: The calibrated tiles enter a automatic polishing line. They pass under a series of polishing heads, each with progressively finer   diamond abrasives (from coarse grits like 50 to very fine grits like 3000). This gradual process grinds the surface to a brilliant, mirror-like gloss.

 •  For Antique Finish: The process differs. For a tumbled antique finish, tiles are placed in a tumbling machine with abrasive grit and water to wear   down  edges and surface. For a brushed or honed antique look, specific brush heads are used on the line to scour the surface, revealing the stone's   texture without a shine.

7. Quality Inspection & Sorting: Each tile is manually inspected for defects. Tiles are sorted into boxes by grade (First Quality, Commercial, etc.) based on color consistency, veining pattern, and the presence of any natural flaws or filler.

8. Packaging: Finally, the sorted tiles are wrapped in protective foam and packed into strong, reinforced cartons for shipping.

Keys to Achieving a Good Quality Product

1. Superior Raw Material: The single most important factor is starting with a high-quality Portoro block with intense black color, bold golden veins, and minimal natural flaws and cracks.

2. Complete Resin Treatment: A proper, thorough resin application is non-negotiable. It determines the tile's structural integrity, prevents future cracking, and ensures a smooth, blemish-free polished surface. Incomplete resin penetration leads to pitting.

3. Precision Calibration: Perfect dimensional accuracy and uniform thickness are hallmarks of a premium tile. This allows for minimal grout lines and a perfectly flat floor installation.

4. Consistent Finish: For polished tiles, a flawless, high-gloss reflectivity with no visible scratches from coarser grits is key. For antique finishes, consistency in the level of distressing across the entire batch is vital.

5. Meticulous Sorting: Because marble is natural, expert sorting is required. A good factory groups tiles with similar veining and color tone together. This ensures the final installation has a harmonious, flowing look rather than a patchwork of mismatched pieces.
